PRESS FORMING

METAL FORMING here we discuss not the other types of sheet metal forming, like rolling, bending and cutting, which are integral part of sheet metal industry, but the process of forming shapes using male and female forming dies to make contours and three dimensional shapes using metal plates or sheets.

The feed is basically cut metal strip sent into the forming zone by means of automated feed, and the strokes are controlled either by manual counters or by CNC controlled cycle times. Multi stage hammering of the moving strip creates the final output of the desired part in the required shape. Trimming of unwanted edges can also be an integral part of the die design.

Principally the tolerances of the parties defined by the

§ depth of the part to be formed

§ thickness of material chosen

§ the elasticity of the metal chosen

§ tonnage of the press chosen to suit the part

§ allowable strength to achieve desired results

§ high volume processing

Features: Forming is used for too small part like metal caps to as big as car body fenders and front fascia, but the point to be noted is that this is suitable ONLY for high volume production or otherwise a buyer has to pay the tool cost fully and then get low volume productions. Repeatability, controlled tolerances are high lights of this process.

Sizes: Using 50 Tonne to 1000 Tonne to make too small a part or too big a part is possible.

Materials used: Almost all forming or shearing grade metals.
